FIND A WAY

Our “official” Creative Approach

At VGCA, we start every job simply by focusing on truths. And when we do so, we always find ourselves in the right headspace to uncover greatness. Then we geek out—HARD.

We enjoy peeling back the layers of previous marketing mumbo-jumbo to strike gold and employ the true human emotions that cause people to react. Our detailed work ethic, conjoined with our unapologetic "what if? Why not?" mentality, is what drives us

Having access to the best writers, designers, strategists, shooters, developers, editors, and producers, we maintain the collective flexibility to tailor our teams to each job so we can manage costs efficiently, cut time out of the process and unleash a heap load of creative dexterity. So whether it's the beginning of a project, on set, in-studio, or in the middle of the desert, we expect everyone to live in the moment and...

Scott is a creative director and writer who, through compelling storytelling, makes consumers say "Hey, I want that!" or "Yeah, I should probably do that!" With over twenty years of experience across agencies in Richmond, San Francisco, Seattle, and North Carolina, he helps brands find their soul and purpose, then tells the world about it in imaginative, results-driven ways.

He's sold Whoppers, cell phones, freight trains, and lottery tickets. He's talked to soon-to-be voters, Wall Street wizards, landscaping fanatics, and mediocre golfers.

No matter the challenge, he believes humans want to be spoken to like humans — which is a good place to start. He also has too many sneakers, a borderline unhealthy obsession with RC planes, and his wife and two daughters still think he's a kid.

You've got questions, we've got answers

What is a Creative Agency?

+

Everything we do is fueled by creative ingenuity—advertising, design, content, and experiences that don’t just exist but demand attention. We help brands carve out an identity that actually sticks—building voices that don’t just talk but resonate. It’s about big ideas, sharp strategy, and design that cuts through the noise. We don’t do bland. We don’t do safe. We take brands, strap ‘em to a rocket, and fire ‘em into the world with purpose, style, and a hell of a lot of impact.

What types of projects do we typically work on?

+

If it demands sharp thinking and a strategic mind to crack a marketing puzzle, count us in. There’s no greater thrill than whipping up a solution that not only works but grabs your audience by the collar—entertaining, engaging, and impossible to ignore. That’s the sweet spot, the high-wire act where creativity and strategy collide, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Do we specialize in any particular industries?

+

Short answer: No. Long answer: Hell no. We’ve been through the agency gauntlet, picking up battle scars and expertise across more industries than we can count. Ham radios? Been there. Toilets? Flushed ‘em. Cars, funeral homes, textiles, trucking, finance, hardware, even police work—we’ve dipped our hands into it all. We’re fast learners, obsessive researchers, and we get a real kick out of diving headfirst into new challenges. If there’s something we don’t know, give us five minutes—we’ll be damn near experts by lunchtime.

How are you different from a “Big Agency”?

+

We cut our teeth in the big agency world—Mullen-Lowe, Martin, GSD&M, Publicis, DDB—the usual suspects. A crash course in high-stakes creativity, where the only rule was: make it great or get out of the way. That foundation set the bar sky-high, but what really fuels us is the “find a way” mentality—the kind that makes a single dollar punch like three. We don’t do reruns, we don’t do safe, and we sure as hell don’t do boring. We take ideas past the guardrails, beyond the expected, and straight into the realm of work that grabs attention, holds it hostage, and delivers results every time. Not every business needs the big dog, but they could use the scrappy cowboy sitting at the end of the bar everyone knows not the mess with.

What's important to VGCA when working with a client?

+

If we’re gonna do this right, we have to click. The best work happens when our clients see us as creative partners, not just some hired guns. We’re a crew of obsessive, idea-chasing lunatics who will throw ourselves headfirst into your brand, and we need that same energy coming back. We work best with people who get our approach—no B.S., no ego, just damn good work and a hell of a lot of fun along the way. Because if we’re not enjoying the ride, what’s the point?

How big is your agency?

+

We’re not. But that’s by design. We prefer to understand what you as a company are looking for and then build our teams around the needs and opportunities. This benefits you in multiple ways. 1. You get top talent on all your work, no B or C teams. 2. Your team is hand-picked for the job, which means talent that we feel fits your needs and culture. 3.It keeps costs lower because we run a lean, tight ship with very little overhead.

Do you do free work?

+

Let’s cut to the chase. You wouldn’t ask an architect to sketch up blueprints before signing them on, right? Same deal here. We’ve been in this game long enough to know that a few real conversations, a few Zoom calls, a deep dive into our work, and a nod from past clients will tell you everything you need to know about how we operate. Can we walk you through some big-picture thinking? Absolutely. But if you’re looking for free work before the ink is dry—sorry, that’s not how this rodeo works. That’s what the job is for.
